The Charleston County School District is proud to introduce the Newcomer Center, located on the R.B. Stall High School campus. This center is dedicated to supporting students who are new to the United States and face challenges in learning English. Through an “intensive English acquisition school within a school,” the center helps scholars acclimate to both their new environment and language, providing them with the tools they need to succeed.

Stall Executive Principal Steve Larson emphasizes the mission of the Newcomer Center as a place where students are offered a safe and nurturing environment. It’s a space where students who have been in the country for less than two years can transition smoothly while maintaining the rich cultural backgrounds they bring with them. “There is a temptation to accelerate students into learning our language,” says Larson, “yet we need to ensure this is done in a way that preserves their culture and identity.”

Inspired by the global diversity of the Newcomer Center’s students, the logo symbolizes unity, culture, and hope. The design features an abstract planet adorned with seven vibrant stripes, each representing one of the seven continents from which the students originate. This colorful palette conveys the joy, vitality, and energy that newcomers bring as they embark on their educational journey.

The choice of bold and lively colors reflects the uplifting, life-giving environment the center strives to provide—a space where students can feel supported, valued, and empowered to learn a new language while maintaining a connection to their cultural heritage. This logo serves as a visual representation of the center’s mission to celebrate diversity, foster inclusivity, and promote a sense of belonging for all.
